Environmental Sustainability

The Yale Program on Health Care Environmental Sustainability (Y-PHES) within the Center on Climate Change and Health is dedicated to improving the environmental performance of health care itself through basic and implementation research, public policy and advocacy, and education. We are a transdisciplinary body of the health professional Yale Schools of Public Health, Medicine and Nursing.

Climate change has profound implications for human health, today and in the future. The 2019 Lancet Commission on Health and Climate Change concluded that:
The effects of climate change are being felt today, and future projections represent an unacceptably high and potentially catastrophic risk to human health.

  • The health community has a vital part to play in accelerating progress to address climate change.
  • The US health sector accounts for 4.6% of global carbon dioxide emissions, a value that is continuously increasing across most major economies.

Everyone’s Responsibility

Environmental responsibility is a shared effort. The everyday choices made across our organization can help us use resources thoughtfully and reduce unnecessary waste. We encourage our teams to consider practical improvements in the way we work.

Our Initiatives

Responsible Waste Management

We aim to support appropriate segregation, handling and disposal of healthcare and laboratory waste, in line with applicable requirements and the needs of each facility.

Efficient Use of Resources

We seek opportunities to use electricity, water and other resources more efficiently across our operations.

Thoughtful Use of Materials

Where practical for healthcare settings, we aim to reduce unnecessary paper and material use and consider responsible options when selecting supplies.

Digital Solutions

We continue to explore digital processes that can reduce reliance on paper and make healthcare services more convenient, while protecting privacy, access and quality.
